After eight months
of hard work and meticulous planning, a 52mm rainfall in 36hours and two huge
gusts of wind (one 45mph and the other 54mph) ended what could have been an
excellent camp – In the interest of safety, the camp was cancelled at 05:20
Saturday 27th May 2000. No one could have planned what the weather
would do, but the fact that all 302 Cubs and Scouts arrived, registered, ate,
camped out for a night and then got home safely the next day without injury, is
a huge credit to the following people, to whom I would like to thank for all
their hard work and support during the planning and a very testing weekend. Thank
you to: Colin
Phillips for arranging all the camp site services – Terry Hughes, Paul Howard,
Graham Bishop Lagget who where the camp services team from start to finish
providing equipment and support to all on site – Clive Gritten for setting up
a First Aid post at such short notice with Sharon Ganther who also provided the
security passes. Mr Graham Bunn from Plumstead Farms who could not have been any
more helpful and Mr Cator for the use of his land as well as the Ministry of
Agriculture for granting us permission to use the set aside land for this event.
To Daffy for the work done on the Archive display and the Firework display
planning. To Land Rover for the best 4x4xfar!. To Sheila Pyatt, John Bishop,
Brenda Savage, Matthew Burrel, Carol Anderson, Shaun Partridge, Gary Brockman,
Gordon Gemmel for their time and support in the planning, but also their
co-operation and outstanding execution of the safe evacuation of the site. To
all The Group adult helpers and leaders for their time and assistance in
planning, equipment support and catering. To Barbara for the accounts. To Kevin
Baker for driving a minibus. To my wife for putting up with all the planning
hassle and now has a 50% chance of the phone ringing and the caller being for
her! And to Carol Hughes who with Michelle supported the camp support team. To
Roy Smith who was always on hand to help on the site from the day we arrived
(Happy retirement). To Fred Crane for his support in the planning outside of the
meetings and Vereen Mercer for her continual encouragement. To Jake my greyhound
for being so good on site except for going in the tent when it was dry and
waiting outside the tent when wet!. To NYAC for the hire of their big white
marquees (Bigger pegs required!) and to Sgt Sikes at RAF Coltishall who loaned
the 18x24s. To Speedy Loo – Geoff Fuel – Skipy – The generator people –
The radio people & 2nd
Warwick sea scouts for the loan and hire of their specialist equipment. To ECN
for not coming to our site to see how we were getting on!. To Matthew from Base
Line on Ice, Paul from East Coast Quads, Edwina and David from Cub Karting,
Heather from Rackheath village hall, Kevin from Reepham Station Cycle Hire, The
lovely people from Jump for Joy. The Ice Cream man – Donut lady and Hot dog
stall team all of whom have been affected as a business and all of whom have
said that they will help at our next event without additional cost. To John
Gaskell who like so many people worked behind the scenes – (see www.camp2000.org.uk
) then like Amy, Brew, Tim and Steve Henstock with their families traveled from
Manchester to assist on our camp. To Ken and Chris who traveled from Warwick to
assist. To The Beaver Scouts who never saw a
thing! To the company that
made my waterproof coat! To The 302
Cubs, Scouts and Ventures who arrived on site, settled in, then got sent home in
very difficult and depressing conditions but did all that was asked and should
now be very proud of themselves. (To
those who I did not mention by name – Thank you)
